Saudi & Iraqi Ambassadorial Embrace

Today I saw the cute Saudi Arabian & former Iraqi UN Ambassadors embrace each other & chat in Arabic with huge smiles & great enthusiasm. The cute little Saudi Ambassador then approached me & said, "yes of course I remember you. Come visit sometime!" Sometimes it's the little things in life that brighten your day.

After a few final stories from the Ambassador, I left feeling like somehow I am inheriting the problems of existing generations. My thoughts immediately turned to Washington and the realization that Presidents probably feel like this all the time. How can one excuse an Under-Secretary General who takes 2 years to respond to an Ambassador, who was caught sleeping on the job according to Iraqi Ambassador Hamid Al-Bayati. Yet somehow these high-ranking officials are making about $50,000 per month. I dig my heels in the ground, hoping our generation can do better and avoid the pitfalls of negligence when in positions of authority. How can so much money be spent without a dime reaching the constituents (even internally within the United Nations)?

I was reassured, however, to note that the infant mortality rate in the Philippines has dropped 50% since the MDGs came out. Even though the goal-setters have their own issues, at least some countries are picking up the slack of the goal-setting entity that is occasionally found hitting the snooze button. "We have sometimes felt like abandoned orphans in the Philippines. However, the U.S. Marines have arrived & we hope this will change attitudes in many of our alliances. We welcome the U.S.'s support, alongside with the 16 other counties that have been supplying aid. Let us hope that we can get over this tragedy & move forward." -Philippine UN Ambassador Roberto Romulo.
